  • Also called hand-held scanners
  • Can be pen or wand-shaped scanner that is swiped
    • wand is made from 1/2" stainless steel tubing or from plastic
    • the optics are in the front with a cord out the back
  • Can also be gun type
    • can be non-contact or near-contact scanner
      • generally uses a beam of focused light to read the bar code
      • active non-contact scanner uses a laser beam that is automatically scanned back and forth across the symbol at a high rate
      • near-contact scanners utilize a CCD device
      • may be stationary as an option

o can also be equipped with optional fixed mounting

  • Typically keyboard wedge devices – they connect in between keyboard and computer
  • Often used as inventory or point of sale devices
  • No software installation needed
  • Low cost; works well
  • Has a LED light source and a sensor to capture its reflection.
  • How it works

o “A hand-held scanner has a light source inside to illuminate the image or text to be scanned.You put the image or text on a flat surface, preferably taping it down to keep it steady and flat. You then take the scanner, press it flat on the image and slowly move it across the surface. This will send the image capture to the computer.
