Touch Screen

Touch Screens have screens that are sensitive to pressure; a user interacts with the computer by touching pictures or words on the screen.

There are different types of touchscreens and they work in different ways as to how it processes the touch into information.

  • Resistive: A resistive touch screen panel is coated with a thin metallic electrically conductive and resistive layer that causes a change in the electrical current which is registered as a touch event and sent to the controller for processing.
  • Surface wave: Surface wave technology uses ultrasonic waves that pass over the touch screen panel. When the panel is touched, a portion of the wave is absorbed. This change in the ultrasonic waves registers the position of the touch event and sends this information to the controller for processing.
  • Capacitive: A capacitive touch screen panel is coated with a material that stores electrical charges. When the panel is touched, a small amount of charge is drawn to the point of contact. Circuits located at each corner of the panel measure the charge and send the information to the controller for processing. Capacitive touch screen panels must be touched with a finger unlike resistive and surface wave panels that can use fingers and stylus.
  • Projected Capacitive Touch: Projected Ca pacitive Touch (PCT) technology is a type of capacitive technology which involves the relationship between an XY array of sensing wires embedded within two layers of non-metallic material, and a third object.
  • Strain Gauge: Also called force panel tech nology, the screen is spring-mounted on the four corners and strain gauges are used to determine deflection when the screen is touched.
  • Acoustic Pulse Recognition: Mechanical energy of a touch (vibration) is translated into an electronic signal.
  • Optical Imaging: This is where two or more image sensors are placed around the edges (mostly the corners) of the screen. Infrared backlights are placed in the camera's field of view on the other sides of the screen. A touch shows up as a shadow and each pair of cameras can then be triangulated to locate the touch or even measure the size of the touching object.
  • Infra Red
  • Dispersive Signal Technology: This system uses sensors to detect the mechanical energy in the glass that occurs due to a touch.
Elo Touchsystems is the global leader in touch technology.

The thing that makes Touch Screens different from any other screen is that it directly relate with its user. I
t does not only function as a screen but also functions as an input device. As a screen, it also controls and processes information with just a single touch on the screen.

Touch Screens are not only for computers but they are also used in cellphones (iPhone), medical machines, refrigerator screens, GPS devices (car screens), etc.

Touch Screen is just one of the big discoveries in technology and its bringing us to a whole new world.

  1. The existence of touchscreen devices on human life give us the ability to interact with a computer using the sense of touch. The touch technology created different touching devices in which human found it necessary and a great advantage. Real time interaction is the best advantage touch screen technology gave to an end user. EloTouchsystems which is known as the global leader on touch technology deserve gratitude from users. As they don't limit the ease brought by the touch screens to computers only but extended the availability of the technology to other devices like smartphones, medical machines, etc. My opinion about the application of the touch technology on smartphones is a great move. Man opted to use cellphones as it was a “touchscreen” which resulted to increase of sales and production. As observed today, most of us have smartphones from a grade school to adult ones. The user friendliness brought by the touch technology made man to stick with it and continue to consume these touchscreen devices.
