Voice Recognition Systems

Voice Recognition Systems

How it works

Voice recognition systems convert voice/speech into on-screen texts. A so-called analog-to-digital converter translates the waves coming from the voice. The system then divides the data into smaller segments called phonemes. Phonemes look like syllables of the word spoken. These phonemes will be fitted into a library or a dictionary of the computer to find out what the user is actually saying.

Leading providers

The leading providers for this technology are Nuance and MacSpeech. Nuance declares itself the leading supplier of speech recognition software. The brand name for voice recognition software is Dragon NaturallySpeaking Solutions. MacSpeech is another supplier of voice recognition system specifically designed for Apple users.

Other Similar Devices

Probably the most similar device with voice recognition systems would be recorders, be it tape or digital based. Recorders, however, only record with the user is saying. With voice recognition systems, it actually encodes and puts to text what the user is trying to say.

Purpose

The main purpose of the voice recognition systems is to help individuals, especially those who are impaired, type without actually typing.

Other Possible Uses in the Future

Other possible uses of voice recognition systems are voice commands. An example of this would simply be turning on the lights using the user’s voice. This technology might be available in the near future.
