Handheld and Platform Barcode Scanners

Wand Barcode Reader

The handheld barcode scanner works by emitting a laser from inside the scanner when the trigger or the button on the handheld scanner is pressed and it becomes a line by being reflected onto a vibrating mirror. The red line is really just a dot which moves fast so it becomes a line. A barcode is placed in view of the laser then the light gets reflected back and then translated into ASCII text and sent to the output device.

Two of the leading providers of handheld barcode scanners are National Barcode and Barcodes Inc.

The handheld scanner is different from other devices because it is much smaller and more portable as compared to platform barcode scanners which need to be attached to some kind of surface.

One use of handheld scanners are seen when we go to supermarkets. They are often located beside the cash register in the check-out lanes. If the platform scanner has problems in scanning, the handheld is instead used because it is much easier to maneuver especially with larger products.

Aside from being designed to be handheld, it could also be mounted and the laser would be emitted continuously rather than being emitted only when the button is pressed.

Platform Barcode Reader

The platform barcode reader’s way to read barcodes are the same with the handheld scanners. Their difference is in the way the device is designed and used. The platform barcode scanner looks like a box with something like a window on the top. The window is where the lasers get emitted.

One provider of platform barcode scanners is Scanhero.

It is different from the handheld scanner because instead of you moving the scanner to scan an object, the opposite is applicable for the platform scanner. The operator needs to be the one who makes the barcode on the object visible to the scanner.

Like handheld scanners, they are seen in the majority of supermarkets. They are used for scanning the merchandise in order to get its price and keep track of how many items of that kind are sold

Compared to the handheld scanner, the platform scanner is less versatile in its uses because it is not portable and it needs to be mounted for it to be used.
