Laser Printers

Laser printers are another common type of printers in the market. The speed of these printers depends on the output that is being processed. It can go print as fast as 200 monochrome pages per minute (ppm).

There are seven steps involved in the laser printing process.

1st - Raster Image Processing
2nd - Charging
3rd - Exposing
4th - Developing
5th - Transferring
6th - Fusing
7th - Cleaning

The most common manufacturers of laser printers are Hewlett-Packard and Brother. As of 2008, 1200 DPI laser printers are already a common.

Also, laser printers mark printouts with an almost invisible dot raster. These dot raster is used for identity purposes. The U.S. government and printer manufacturers use these to identify counterfeiters.

Portable Printers

Portable Printer:

a. Again, it works very much like the typical printers. First, you install the software that comes with the device. Then, you supply papers and place them on the designated area. Lastly, “print” your document by clicking the icon.

b. The leading providers for this service are the ff: HP, Canon and Samsung.

c. From the term itself, it differs with its portability. This device can be easily brought anywhere by the user. It weighs significantly lighter compared to typical printers. It is good for people who travel a lot and are in need of instant printing services (eg. photohraphers).

d. It is usually used for instant printing. For instance, some portable printers can be used via a USB device. This means, if you have some printable documents in your flash drive, you can easily print it.
e. As of now, since it has basically the same functionality as an ink-jet printer, there isn’t much any other use for portable printers.

Laser Printers

Laser Printer:

a. Much like the ink-jet printer, it works by installing first the software devices needed for it. Then after the installation, it will work by simply supplying paper in the designated area and clicking “print” for your document.

b. The leading providers for this service are the ff: HP, IBM and Epson.

c. The laser printer differs from other similar devices in terms of its efficiency. Compared to standard ink-jet printers, the laser printer has a relatively higher “page per minute” capability. This basically means it can produce more printed pages. Moreover, the laser printer differs in terms of quality. The images and lettering are crisper. Lastly, the laser printers use toners instead of ink cartridges.

d. The device is usually used for printing of large quantities since it can, as mentioned earlier, print more pages than the usual printers. It is also used for printing images (eg. Pictures, greeting cards, brochures, etc)

e. Laser printers usually come with other uses. For instance, my Samsung laser printer at home also has the capability to fax, scan and photocopy. Basically, it has become an all-in-one kind of device.

InkJet Printer Facts

Ink Jet Printer:

  1. How does it work?

-“Inkjet printing, like laser printing, is a non-impact process. Ink is emitted from nozzles while they pass over media. The operation of an inkjet printer is easy to visualize: liquid ink in various colors being squirted onto paper and other media, like plastic film and canvas, to build an image. A print head scans the page in horizontal strips, using the printer's motor assembly to move it from left to right and back again, while the paper is rolled up in vertical steps, again by the printer. A strip (or row) of the image is printed, then the paper moves on, ready for the next strip. To speed things up, the print head doesn’t print just a single row of pixels in each pass, but a vertical row of pixels at a time.”
